The single school trust opened in September 2008. A special school for children with severe or profound learning difficulties, Montacute home local authority is Poole, additionally it takes children from Bournemouth and Dorset local authorities. It has specialist status in cognition and learning.

School: Montacute Special.
Partners: JP Morgan, Poole LA, Dorset Scope, Bournemouth University, Bournemouth and Poole FE College Langside School, a Montacute Governor and Montacute HT. Dorset Scope is a charity supporting children and adults with Cerebral Palsy who have physical and learning disabilities who work in Poole, Bournemouth and Dorset.

Some partners had an existing association with Montacute; new partners were chosen by the governors after extensive consultation with parents. Montacute is in partnership with Langside an independent special school with specialist status in sensory and physical needs. Langside is managed by an independent group, Dorset Scope, which is also a trust partner. The trust is seeking to use the expertise of its commercial partners to develop the use of technology in special schools.

Examples of trust impact include:

  • A short break scheme that has proved very successful with students, parents and the LA.
  • Joint meetings of teachers and therapists.
  • Extended school and care pathfinder commissioning.
  • Close co-operation with Bournemouth and Poole FE College re joint activities/shared facilities.
  • Development of problem solving approach.

Plans for the future include; exploring an inclusive approach between the Montacute and Langside schools, investigating policies for recruitment and retention of quality staff and with trust partners exploring the use of ICT in a special school.

“The short-break work has been stunning. Just what we needed. A different culture has been brought to bear on a traditional problem and solutions are now clear and transparent. We are delighted” LA Officer
