Selly Oak Trust School & Sixth Form Centre

On 12 September 2007, Selly Oak School and Specialist Science College became one of the first 30 Trust school and the first special school to gain trust status. Selly Oak School, recognised by Ofsted as an outstanding secondary special school and sixth form, caters for more than 400 students with special educational needs (SEN).

The trust

The trust will directly support the work of the school including developing and expanding the range of support for people with SEN in a wide variety of settings particularly at age 19 plus. It will also provide support and advice for parents confused about how best to help, and secure help for, children with SEN.

As Selly Oak School remains a maintained Birmingham school, both the new Foundation school and the Trust will offer vehicles for the local authority to work in partnership to achieve its goals under Every Child Matters.

The deficit of services for young adults with SEN after leaving school in Birmingham has been identified by parents and the local authority. Selly Oak School Trust will provide an umbrella for the development of a wide range of services and support.

School comments

Graham Ridley, headteacher of Selly Oak School, said: ‘I am particularly delighted that Selly Oak School’s ongoing partnership with Midlands Co-operative Society Limited has extended and deepened in this manner. We share a history of deep ethical concern, care for the environment, and a determination to build a better community for the future.

‘Selly Oak School will be further strengthened and enlivened by the corporate acumen, business knowledge, ethical stance, support and challenge which this partnership provides. Our joint commitment to provide support for the vulnerable and disadvantaged will be greatly strengthened through the organisational coherence this new structure brings.
